Reach Directive is an EU mandate which regulates any and all chemicals which are used in the production of everyday end products. REACH addresses the production and use of chemical substances, and their potential impacts on both human health and the environment. It is the strictest law to date regulating chemical substances and will impact industries throughout the world. REACH entered into force in June 2007, with a phased implementation over the next decade. The REACH directive requires organizations to (i) register their use of chemicals and (ii) defines limits to the quantity of certain chemicals (substances) that may be used in products sold in the EU.
REACH makes industry responsible for assessing and managing the risks posed by chemicals and providing appropriate safety information to their users. In parallel, the European Union can take additional measures on highly dangerous substances, where there is a need for complementing action at EU level. The main aims of REACH are to ensure a high level of protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals. REACH regulations covers not only industrial chemicals but also chemicals, which are used in our day-to-day life. All the exporters and importers of chemicals will identify and manage the risks and hazards associated with the chemicals that they manufacture and market. REACH requires manufacturers and importers of chemicals to produce data on all chemical substances that are produced or imported into the EU in volumes above one ton a year.
